Why this matters
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) regulates all activities that may affect the environment in Uganda under the National Environment Act 2019 and the Environmental and Social Assessment Regulations S.I. No. 143 of 2020. Any construction project, residential, commercial, or industrial, may require an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) or a Project Brief before approval. Section 112 of the Act mandates a Project Brief for projects listed in Schedule 4, while Section 113 requires a full ESIA for projects listed in Schedule 5. Operating without the required clearance exposes your project to fines, stop orders, and legal liability.
